Fraunhofer – Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) in Pfinztal, New Building for Polymertechnic

Two experimental halls in east-west orientation respond to the topography with different room heights. The overlying two-storey rectangular building requires the integration of labour and office space as well as communications zones for organised gathering or spontaneous discussions. Seminar rooms, library and the vertical connection elements are situated in the double-storey glazed foyer.

The artistic and high-contrast material combination uses environmentally-friendly building material. Brightness and transparency are the guidelines to increase workplace comfort and experimental varieties for the users in both inside and outside the building.

The glazing in the interior space makes the functions and activities visibly as well as increases the communication. All load-bearing and non load-bearing walls are completed in reinforced concrete and brickwork. Due to the requirement for a flexible use of the space, the partitions of labour rooms, offices and corridors are made in light construction. The workplace comfort in the offices is increased by large glazing and the reduction of artificial lighting. Each façade is designed according to its function and orientation.
