Smart-Center in Erfurt

The Architecture Partnership Erfurt planned for the Property Company Russ & Janot GbR a Smart-Retrofit-Centre which is in direct neighbourhood to Erfurt Air Port and the site is located in the main highway to the city centre. The glazed hall is based on an existing workshop building from the 80s. Workshops, store room for Smart as well as a spacious exhibition for Mercedes-Benz latest car are consisted in the new building. The exhibition hall and sales area for Smart are situated in the semicircular ground floor. The First floor with a restaurant is suspended by a tightrope from the roof girders. The semicircular glazed façade is supported by a steel system which made use of the material specific character to be optimal dematerialised. Light colours (white and silver) and bright building materials sustain the transparent character of the Thüringer Centre. The yellowish round elevator tower with integrated pantry breaks through the clear geometrical plan and acts as a distinctive landmark. Only the façade with the white shading lamellae curtain walls as well as the glazed elevator tower represent the corporate identity of the company. A filigree steel walkway connects the future Mercedes-Benz exhibition hall with the Smart Centre
